This left-handed opening batsman completed his double century on the second day in the second Test match being played against England in Visakhapatnam. When the first day's play ended on Friday, he was not out after scoring 179. He had said that he would like to score a double century and the very next day he did so.
Yashasvi played an innings of 209 runs in 290 balls with the help of 19 fours and 7 sixes. With this, he has become the third youngest batsman in India to score a double century in Test.
On Saturday, he completed his double century by hitting a six on the first ball of 102 overs and a four on the second ball.
He has achieved this feat at the age of 22 years 36 days. Before him, the names of Sunil Gavaskar and Vinod Kambli are in this list. Vinod Kambli scored a double century against England at the Wankhede Stadium in 1993 at the age of 21 years and 32 days. After this comes Sunil Gavaskar, who scored a double century at the age of 21 years 277 days.
In the year 2020, Yashasvi Jaiswal caught everyone's attention with his brilliant performance in the Under-19 World Cup. Then his coach Jwala Singh had told in a conversation with BBC Hindi how Yashasvi had faced difficult situations.
He told, I saw him playing for the first time when Yashasvi was 11, 11-and-a-half years old. After talking to him, I came to know that he was struggling a lot with the basics. He neither had money to eat nor There was no money and no place to stay. He lived in a tent with a guard in a club in Mumbai. He played cricket during the day and also sold golgappas at night. Most of all, at an early age, he went to his hometown in Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh. Was away from home in Mumbai.
Jwala Singh had said, That was a very difficult period for him, because children also miss home. In a way, he had lost his childhood. But Yashasvi wanted to do something with his life. My story is also like this. It was the same. I too had gone to Mumbai from Gorakhpur at a young age to do something. I too had faced the same thing that Yashasvi was facing.
I was able to understand his problem. He used to get very little money from home. He could not even tell anything to his family because there was a fear in his heart that if they came to know about everything, he might call him back. Then I decided that I will support this boy, help him, train him, fulfill all his needs, since then he has been with me.
While explaining the secret of Yashasvi's performance in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, coach Jwala Singh had said that players with such talent have to be handled with utmost care.
He said, One mistake can take a lot back. If we look at their record, there are many players who work hard, but very few perform keeping reality in mind.
Small successes don't matter. It's all temporary. Even after performing well in one match, you still have to play brilliantly in the next match. I explained to him from the beginning that one should not remember a good performance for long. Always maintain your hunger. For this I also gave many examples to Yashasvi.
Yashasvi had initially trained in very challenging economic conditions and he did not get any financial help from anywhere.
His coach Jwala Singh said, Actually, Yashasvi told me that he is ready to bear everything to play cricket. His words touched my heart. I too used to think something like this about myself when I faced a situation like Yashasvi's. I was turning four. I just decided that I will take my cricket forward from where I left it. Seeing him playing, I feel as if I am playing, because his style is similar to mine.
Recalling his first meeting with Yashasvi, Jwala Singh says, When I met Yashasvi, my struggle was over and I was in a good condition. Yashasvi did not do the same struggle that I did to establish myself. I He took care of his accommodation, food, coaching and even sent him to England for training. Seeing this, many times my family members tell Yashasvi that you have got everything. If Jwala had got all this, then the same would have happened.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL that year for Rs 2 crore 40 lakh.
Then Jwala Singh had said that if you go to the house of any sportsperson or a person associated with the army, you will see the medals hanging on his wall, not the money kept in his safe which no one shows.
He says, Same is the case for a cricket player. Achievements are important for him. Yes, it is true that with money you can improve your life. Now our aim is that he should go to IPL and become the best emerging player. Win the prize. After this, Yashasvi has been performing well continuously in IPL. He has impressed with his performance in all three formats, T20, ODI and Test.
